Pinhole apertures are gold disks of diameter 2.8 mm, with a central cylindrical hole of diameters of 10 um or 5 um. The thickness of the gold is 60 um to 80 um. Being made of gold and having in general smaller diameters than laser-drilled & polished Ni pinholes, working at higher photon energies and better resolution is possible.

Pinhole apertures can be used for filtering out spurious focal points of zone plates, beam shaping or scanning image fields with photodiodes behind them for imaging purposes.
